The plastic will break away easily preventing damage to your trailer where the steel is more likely to either rip the screws out of the trailer or damage the door by bending it on the hinges.

I understand your concern with pulling on the doors to release from the holder and possibly damaging the smaller lightweight doors of a teardrop style camper. Thanks for the photo, and the best option for a door retainer that is stronger than a rubber door retainer is the plunger and socket style, which are more heavy duty and will allow your door to stay open while the wind blows. This style has gotten really good reviews from our customers who have used them, including their use on horse trailers.

If you swung the door hard enough you'd get the plunger of the # PLR64-66 to stick in the rubber end and hold it there better than the magnetic setup. You would also be able to reach out and pull the door to disengage the holder as well once you've opened the screen door. view full answer...
The type of door holder you are describing sounds like the plunger and socket style like the part # PLR62-66 which has a 1-3/4 inch long plunger or part # PLR64-66 which is 2-1/4 inch long.

Regarding the man door and the awning, is there any way that you can attach the plunger style holder, # DH605, to the support are for the awning that is causing the interference? Otherwise, you could use something like the hook and keeper, # 383400. If they were placed near the door hinges you could probably configure it to hold the door open where it will not interfere or shut. The same thing for the rear barn doors.

Since you have some obstructions on the side of the trailer preventing the main door from swinging all the way open you'll need to use an angled door keeper like the 45-Degree T-Style Hook and Keeper Door Holder part # 37211765. Then for the tack room you should be able to get away with just a standard keeper like the T-Style Hook and Keeper Door Holder for Trailer Rear or Side Door part # PLR9-SS.

I do not have a way to test how much force it takes to pull the rubber stem from the socket # DH39R (no force gauge available) but having used this type of door keep before I can tell you that it usually takes a good jerk to free it up.

For the passive door, you can add the Cam-Action Lockable Door Latch Kit w/ Narrow Hasp for Small Enclosed Trailers - Zinc-Plated Steel # 383200 to keep that side door locked while the other is open. This will keep your door from catching the wind and opening. Another option I recommend is for the interior of the door using the Bolt-On Zinc Spring Latch # SL716 on the top and bottom of the door like pins in a traditional french door except on the interior.

The Replacement Controlled Motion Hinge # LC95VR will still allow the door to move but it will be more restricted in its movement. The hinge adds friction to the door so you are able to open it and leave it in different positions without moving in light winds or due to being on a hill. A strong enough wind will allow the door to move but it will not slam like you are used to having.
